Have you ever felt “heavy” and bloated after a Sunday lunch or a rich dinner? That feeling like your digestion has stopped and your energy has disappeared?
In China, there is a natural remedy consumed for centuries to combat exactly this. It’s not a medicine, it’s a tea: Pu-erh (or Puer Tea).
Often called the “fat-devouring tea”, Pu-erh is revered for its medicinal properties and is many people’s secret to keeping weight under control and digestion smooth. Today, we explain how this “earthy” tea can become your best ally.
What Exactly Is Pu-erh?
Unlike green tea (which is fresh) or black tea (which is oxidized), Pu-erh is a fermented tea.
Originating from Yunnan province, this tea goes through a special microbial fermentation process. It is this fermentation that gives it its dark (almost black) color, its characteristic earthy flavor and its unique health properties. In Portugal, it is often known as “Red Tea”, although in Chinese classification it is a “Dark Tea” (Hei Cha).
There are two main types, but for those looking for digestive comfort, we focus on Shu Pu-erh (Cooked/Ripe), which is smoother, darker and comforting.
How Does It Help “Burn” Fat?
Pu-erh is often sought after by those who want to lose weight (weight loss tea). But how does it work?
- Blocking Fats: Studies suggest that Pu-erh helps prevent the body from absorbing part of the fats ingested in the meal, facilitating their elimination.
- Acceleration of Metabolism: Thanks to caffeine and unique compounds generated in fermentation, Pu-erh acts as a mild metabolism stimulant.
- Cholesterol Reduction: Regular consumption is associated with the reduction of “bad” cholesterol (LDL).
In Chinese culture, it is unthinkable to eat Dim Sum (food that can be fatty) without a pot of Pu-erh to accompany it. It acts as a natural “detergent”, cleansing the palate and digestive system.
